"True to form the Brazilian tenor saxophonist goes far and wide with his studio albums, releasing a customary bunch of three powered by a customary spirit of adventure. In fact Villa Lobos Suite is one of the most subversive of Perelman's offerings to date insofar as it presents a very personal take on his late, great compatriot composer by way of a programme of original improvised pieces with two viola players, Maneri and Kalmanovitch, rather than reprises of iconic works, as others may have done. Villa Lobos’ great achievement was to wrap spikes in silk so complete was his blend of fragmentation and melody and the session captures that sensibility through a group that implies a micro-orchestra in which sits a trio that both agitates and contemplates. Butterfly Whispers is the second album by the excellent trio featuring drummer Whit Dickey and pianist Matthew Shipp that debuted on 2012's The Clairvoyant. The group takes a bit more time to warm up than on the aforementioned album but by the latter half of the set, particularly the excellent ‘Epiphany’, they more than prove their worth as players who in no way dilute their personalities but fashion a shared vocabulary whereby snatches of march time, swirling, often vaporous horn and soulfully splintered piano lines make for a fine gothic romance. Finally the Perelman-Shipp duo that has been one of the key strands of the saxophonist's output for long years takes another step on its developmental road with Complementary Colors. Hues and shades are the conceptual base for the music with every third track being titled as a combination of the colors of the previous two pieces. The intent may well be to convey clash and blend on tracks like ‘Blue And Red’ or ‘Green And Magenta’ but the communicative dynamic between the players is arrestingly strong, so that the shifting spectrum of the music, its journey from motion to stillness or harmonic gravity to levity, is anything but predictable. Every so often some of the delicious melancholy of the Shepp-Waldron duet pierces the air but Perelman and Shipp push at deconstruction more consistently. "L'arte del depistaggio, secondo un sax e due viole. Si potrebbe definire così questo avventuroso CD, che già nel titolo tende a spiazzare l'ascoltatore.
Questa inusuale disposizione timbrica dà luogo ad un percorso destrutturante, che peraltro non prevede titoli per le composizioni proposte. In primo piano l'improvvisazione atematica con libere cellule melodiche, che dell'opera di Villa Lobos rilasciano nulla o quasi. All'insegna della mimesi timbrica, Perelman gioca ad avvicinare la pratica del suo strumento a quello dei compagni di viaggio, per far volare su tutti i registri il suo sax, che talora agisce come un violoncello o un violino.
L'empatia si sostanzia in un comune fraseggio angoloso ed irregolare, digradante verso le soluzioni più impervie. È un modo intelligente di far coesistere tradizione e innovazione, per innestare sul respiro timbrico eurocolto l'humus dell'avanguardia jazzistica.
